What is the inspiration behind Yukon Soaps Co.?
Featuring wild rose petals, juniper berries, a Yukon-shaped press, and the beadwork of Indigenous artisans, these soaps are literally infused and imprinted with the spirit of the Yukon.

Along with hand-crafting soaps, sole proprietor Joella Hogan has worked to make Yukon Soaps a community building, language learning, earth connecting, hub in the heart of the Yukon—the small town of Mayo.

For over twenty years, The Yukon Soaps Company has been supporting economic diversification, authentic relationships with customers, and bringing life to the heart of the Yukon.

The Yukon Soaps Company has become a household staple and souvenir of choice for visitors—take a little bit of the Yukon home with you.

In celebration of Indigenous Heritage Month, what does it mean to you to create a beautiful soap brand around your culture?
When I took on the company, I was looking for a way to bring people together, connecting them to culture and to land. And I have been able to do just that—from getting elders and local kids out on the land to gather wild botanicals, to employing youth in her workshop, to offering crafting workshops, and participating in farmer’s markets across the Yukon; Yukon Soaps is spreading the love.

During these interesting times, what keeps you inspired?
Learning and living my culture by harvesting, gathering and processing. These days I am working on a big beautiful moose skin.

Covid has affected us all in different ways. Can you share with us how this time has affected you and your business? And do you have a message to share with the community?
I never could have imagined how much my business would grow in the last year. When the pandemic started, I expected my business to crash. Instead it was the opposite and the love and support has been incredible. My message is, “Sothan de ik’anete” which means take care of yourself in my grandmothers language.

Tell us one fun fact about Yukon Soap Co.
I bought this business in 2012 without ever having made soap. I just took a big leap!
