Where are you from originally? If not from Vancouver, how did it become your home?
Richmond moved to Vancouver after high school and went to work in the service industry.

And what is one thing that you love about Vancouver?
I love the opportunity that Vancouver brings to entrepreneurs especially in the industry of hospitality and tourism.

Tell us your story, how was Salty’s Lobster Shack born?
Had a friend from back east come visit who was a lobster fisherman and while he was here was shocked to see nobody had made lobster rolls their focal point. We hit the drawing board and after about a week Salty’s Lobster Shack was the brand name we decided on.

What was a challenge you faced with Salty’s when you first entered the Food Truck Industry?
We weren’t sure if seafood out a food truck was going to be well received. But you have to take your shots and luckily for us Salty’s was a hit fairly quickly.

What is something that would surprise people about the Food Truck industry?
The amount of trial and error that’s involved. You have to make a million mistakes before things click. It’s part of the learning curve.

My personal favourite menu item is your Lobster Bisque! What are your two top selling menu items and what is your personal favourite?
The Lobster Bisque and Lobster Roll. They just go so well together. Can’t get enough of them.

What menu item never made it out of the test kitchen?
Lobster Pot Pies. They weren’t able to travel well and execution was more of a challenge out of the truck then we originally thought.

Who is the most memorable celebrity that you’ve served your food to and what did they order?
Jon Hamm came into our East Van Brewing location and ordered the entire menu. He was a really nice guy.

Tell us one fun fact about Salty’s.
The rewards of tasting success after all your hard work is indescribable. It’s a culmination of failures and successes coming together to present a clear picture of the vision you had when it all started.

What’s the most interesting thing that’s happened in your career so far?
There’s too many to list. I won’t even try. I’ll offer a word instead. Persistence

Covid has affected us all in different ways. Can you share with us how this time has affected you and your business? And do you have a message to share with the community?
There’s always a silver lining in any situation and if you look hard enough you can turn any challenge into a win.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to start their own business? What is something you wish someone had told you?
Make sure you have three times the start up capital you think you need and find a niche nobody else is doing.
