Jenn Harper is the founder and CEO of Cheekbone Beauty, a sustainable brand with a focus on Indigenous beauty, or as Jenn elaborates:

Cheekbone Beauty is a digitally native direct to consumer brand that is helping Indigenous youth see themselves in a beauty brand while using the concept of a circular economy in the brand’s ethos and in developing their latest line of products.  Creating a new segment in the beauty industry – Sustainable Socially Conscious Beauty.

Jenn shares with us her experience bringing social consciousness to this new frontier of digital business.

Where are you from originally?
I was born in Thunder Bay and raised in St. Catharines ON.

What are your top 3 personal favourite products of your line and why?
Everyday is KEYAH + SWEETGRASS Lipgloss, Best Bold SARAIN Liquid Lipstick and can’t live with out our brow product, I wear BROWN.

In your opinion, what are some products that all woman need in their beauty routine?
I feel like they can openly express themselves, so whatever that looks like for them!

What are some beauty bands that have inspired you and/or that you look up to?
Glossier’s ability to build an online community, granted working as an Editor at Vogue helped and her blog was a massive success before launching the brand. Really savvy business woman for sure! Any brand that doesn’t use fear-mongering as a marketing tactic has my business!

In your opinion, what is a beauty “fad” that isn’t quite what people think?
Green, clean and sustainable beauty. There is so much misinformation that gets repeated because of marketing teams that market bold one liners, without all the facts.

What advice do you have for someone wanting to start a Beauty line? What is something you wish someone had told you?
It better be revolutionary, your ‘so what’ factor or what makes your business better than anything on the market. The world doesn’t need another lipstick brand. It businesses that are trying change the world and solve problems, so before starting ask yourself; how will my business change the world.

Cheekbone’s no-landfill lipstick packaging combines compostable and recyclable materials.

COVID has affected us all in different ways. If you’re comfortable, can you share with us how this time has affected you and your business? And do you have a message to share with the community?
COVID and social unrest have actually helped our business, as odd as that sounds. We think humanity is thinking deeper and differently about what brands they support. Our original business plan in 2017 pushed this idea, of doing business with a conscious. We call it socially conscious beauty.

What’s coming up for you that you’re excited about? (new product releases, development, events)
July 15th we launched a whole new something!!! I promised my marketing team, I would shut on this one! I usually spill everything because I am so excited…
