Tell us your story. What inspired you to start your studio and to create these beautiful rugs and tufted textiles?
In school I was already focused on embroidery and textile arts, so I think it was a natural transition into tufting. I went out on a limb and ordered my tools and materials online and just taught myself through it. I was really inspired by functional art, and the perspectives that we look at, different work for different utilities and the ideas of value and how that shifts between fine art and the beauty of our everyday.

What has been the most memorable experience in your career so far?
I think the most memorable experiences I’ve had are always collaborating with others. I’ve gotten to meet some exceptional creatives in this city and across the world that are truly lovely and remarkable people, and I think of each of them when I read this question.

Where do you source your materials from?
I source New Zealand wool that’s processed in Quebec as well as tons of parts and tools from across the globe.

Where can we find your products?
Some work hangs at Picnics and Poetry in Vancouver, as well as my website, www.juliamior.com .

During these interesting times, what keeps you inspired?
Keeping busy learning and exploring everything and anything. I think everything informs my art practice, and constantly learning always gives me the energy and inspiration to keep creating. Currently I’m experimenting with watercolour and learning about electrical systems. I’m not sure what it will do to inform my practice yet but I’m getting good at coming up with electrical system dad jokes. Still terrible at watercolour though.

Tell us one fun fact about you.
I’m really into motorcycles, and I’ve been building a new motorcycle this winter for next summer. Really excited about it!

Thank you Julia for taking some time to share your story. Your creations are so authentic and unique and we look forward to what you come out with next!
